Case Study: Adapting a Two-Hour Backup Power Plan for an Operating Room in Virginia

An operating room project in Virginia needed two hours of battery backup power for designated equipment. As construction progressed, the company identified additional equipment needing protection, and the backup power plan needed to reflect those requirements.

Medi-Products worked with the project team to review equipment specifications and electrical drawings, adjust the system sizing, and develop a recommendation around the two-hour runtime requirement.

The selected solution was a P40-12LI48-208 battery backup power system.

The Challenge: Define the Full Backup Power Requirement

The equipment requiring backup power included medical gas equipment, a medical vacuum pump, desktop computers, monitors, network equipment, and printers. The team also evaluated HVAC requirements, including support for the operating room’s positive pressure.

Sizing the system required an understanding of the equipment’s operating demand, startup requirements, and expected use during an outage. The two-hour runtime requirement needed to be assessed against that combined load.

As construction progressed and the company identified additional equipment needing protection, Medi-Products adjusted its assessment accordingly.

The Approach: Coordinate System Sizing with the Electrical Design

Medi-Products reviewed updated equipment information alongside electrical drawings supplied by the project’s design team.

That coordination helped connect the backup power recommendation to the facility’s developing requirements. As the scope changed, Medi-Products revisited the calculations and worked with the project team to address the effect on system sizing.

The team also coordinated the proposed system’s location and installation considerations with the broader construction plan.

The Selected Solution: Backup Power for the Assessed Loads

Medi-Products identified the P40-12LI48-208 to support the project’s two-hour runtime requirement at the assessed load.

The recommendation accounted for the equipment information and electrical design reviewed with the project team. Planning also addressed installation and delivery logistics to support the construction process.

Build the Backup Plan Around the Actual Project

Backup power requirements can change as construction progresses. Reviewing updated equipment specifications and electrical drawings together helps keep the system recommendation aligned with the equipment needing protection.

Medi-Products works with facility owners and project teams to assess equipment loads, runtime needs, and installation considerations throughout that process.

Which Battery Backup System Will Work With My Vaccine Refrigerator, Pharmacy Fridge, or Laboratory Freezer?

Choosing battery backup for cold storage starts with the equipment you need to protect. A vaccine refrigerator, pharmacy fridge, and laboratory freezer may have different electrical requirements, even when they look similar or occupy the same amount of space.  The right system must match the equipment’s electrical specifications, handle its startup demand, and provide enough […]

Case Study: How Battery Backup Power Supports Continuous Operation of Critical Hemodialysis Equipment

For an acute care hospital in Eastern Pennsylvania, preparing for a power outage meant looking beyond the equipment at the patient’s bedside. The hospital needed reliable backup power for its central reverse osmosis (RO) water purification system, an essential part of the infrastructure supporting hemodialysis.  The RO system was designed to meet stringent international medical […]
